World Design Capital 2008 - Torino

Design is becoming an increasingly fundamental tool in today's rapidly changing environment, Corporations are including design in the very core of their business strategies, governments are taking advantage of effective design to make their cities more attractive, more liveable and more efficient, and citizens around the globe are becoming increasingly aware and attuned to the benefits of design.
Torino, the WDC pilot city, may have one day felt overshadowed by a multitude of larger and more well-know European design centres. Á city that has in the past been synonymous with industry and in particular with Fiat, but in recent years Torino has adopted an aggressive transformation strategy aimed at renovating the city. Host of the XX Olympic Winter Games in February 2006, Torino took the world stage with great gusto. With world-class architecture, a vibrant economy, the trademark Italian joie de vivre and a palpable cultural effervescence, Torino is deserving of the spotlight. Design has always been a cornerstone of Italian industry and Torino is a shining example of what can be accomplished harnessing its full power.
