New ideas of art

It's been years since the Lower East Side's main draws were knishes and cheap pants on Orchard Street, but the New York neighborhood's gentrification becomes officially complete this weekend with the opening of The New Museum, the Bowery's modern architectural marvel designed by Tokyo architectural firm Sejima + Nishizawa/SANAA. The 60,000-square-foot space, which includes a theater, four public galleries, an educational center, and rooftop terraces, will be the city's only spot devoted strictly to contemporary art. Its premiere exhibition, “Unmonumental: The Object in the 21st Century,” is a study in sculptural assemblage from more than 30 international artists, including John Bock and Eva Rothschild.

Forget bags and shoes—the most stylish accessory this season is a designer place to rest your head

A handful of hotels have recently taken luxury to the next level by inviting top designers to create warm and welcoming spaces. In Rome, Bottega Veneta's Tomas Maier just unveiled his three-bedroom suite at the St. Regis hotel. Meanwhile in Paris, Christian Lacroix has lent a couture touch to the Hotel Bellechasse. At the Sixty Hotel in Riccione, Italy, 30 artists from around the world have treated the walls as a canvas to bring the brand's vision to life. Bulgari has left an Italian-accented design stamp on the cliffs of Bali, while the Palazzo Versace Hotels will be bringing even more glamour and glitz to Dubai in 2008.
